The bill looks like a triumph of GOP sclerosis + dysfunction over attempts to remake its agenda along coherent populist (Vance) or dynamist (Musk) lines, which is why the VP is implausibly casting its details as so much "minutiae" and Musk is screaming from the sidelines.

The thing is: Kurilla’s logic is really problematic. Yes, China is making inroads in the Middle East. Chinese companies and exports are helping to shape the region — the US firing more missiles on behalf of Israel does not help us with that. Backing the war in Gaza — massively

I argue in my latest piece for IISS News that in the wake of Iran's attack on Qatar's al-Udeid base, the Gulf states must now confront the hard realities of their changed security environment. iiss.org/online-analysi…

For the Gulf states, a weakened Iran is not necessarily less dangerous, Israel is a destabilising and unrestrained actor and the US presence in the Gulf is more likely to invite Iranian retaliation than prevent it. No easy answers on the horizon.
