My thoughts are with the loved ones of those who died and were injured in yesterday's tragedy in the Channel. More safe and legal routes for asylum seekers are needed, along with support for host countries and ending devastating wars that drive displacement.

Over 1 million people have been displaced in Lebanon by Israel's attacks on Hezbollah. Ivo Freijsen, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon, tells #BBCWato the struggle to care of them is made worse by the bombing of a key road to Syria.

Syria is at a crossroads between peace and war, freedom and lawlessness, prosperity and misery. For its refugees, the watershed is between repatriation and the continuation of exile. It all depends on a peaceful transition, respecting the lives and aspirations of all Syrians.

For years, millions of Syrians endured many hardships. Any hope to end that suffering is dependent on a peaceful transition in Syria and support from the international community, including to meet urgent humanitarian needs in the country.

A durable #GazaCeasefire will bring immense relief to devastated Gaza. We rejoice with all those for whom the nightmare is over. But we must also trust that it leads to serious negotiations and to just, lasting peace for both peoples, so that no more ceasefires will be needed.

Thanks Yvette Cooper and Jenny Chapman for our cordial and useful talks in London. UNHCR values its partnership with the UK, will remain a constructive interlocutor on asylum issues and trusts that UK support in responding to refugee and humanitarian crises will stay strong.
