City Council is considering two new bills that will make it much harder to fight for safer streets, better biking, and more public space. Here’s what you need to know and how to fight back.

Today, City Council is hosting a hearing on e-bike licensing. Last week, an e-bike rider was killed in the Bronx — the 17th e-bike rider killed this year alone. There is no hearing planned about that.

Today's the day: the City Council's hearing on Intro 606. We'll be posting updates and fact checks throughout the day, so follow along!

Today the New York City Council is considering a bill that, if passed, would require all e-bikes to be registered with NYC Department of Transportation. Here's why that's actually a problem:

I am here today as leader of Los Deliveristas Unidos, e-bike rider and community leader to oppose Intro 606. I am quite surprise to see some of the most progressive elected official sign up to this bill that will results in more policing and criminalization of e-bile riders,

Ydanis Rodriguez We're hearing a lot about e-bikes breaking traffic laws and running red lights. Fact Check: NYC DOT's Open Data on Rejected Speed and Red Light Camera shows that only 1% of violations were from e-bikes.

Intro. 606 will create more problems than it solves.   Rather than gifting the NYPD with more tools to harass working NYers, we need get smart about street safety. That means tackling illegal parking and ghost plates while designing streets that work for everyone, not just cars.

🗣️ “Intro 606 isn’t about safety—it’s about criminalizing e-bike riders, especially #Deliveristas. If we truly care about street safety, let’s focus on real solutions: education, better infrastructure, & worker protections.” Check out Gustavo Ajche’s op-ed in Streetsblog New York.👇🏾

Here's a picture of my bike, which needs to be licensed under intro 606, next to a non-electric version of the same thing. Can you tell which one needs to be pulled over for not having a license? Can you identify them if they're in motion? There is no way to enforce this law.

I'm still in disbelief about 606. Every city that has tried to do it thinks it's terrible. Every transportation expert thinks it's terrible. It would cost many millions and take years, and yet... here we are talking creating a new city DMV for bikes and scooters.

There were 39,685 hit-and-run drivers in NYC last year and only 375 were caught. But sure, putting little license plates on ebikes will make the city safer. nyc.gov/site/nypd/stat…

every nyc council member: the dot is slow and nonresponsive also every nyc council member: let's pass two bills that make the dot work slower and have less time to be responsive

Paris built 300 school streets. NYC built… two curbs. As a reminder, your city council just passed a bill that would make it more difficult and onerous to build safe infrastructure in front of schools (Intro 103). Loser government
