Tonight’s shameful scenes do not represent our culture, our history, or our people. Our great city is built on togetherness and acceptance, and Sunderland will forever be for all. We are stronger as one community. Now. Then. Always. ❤️🤍

In the late 1970s, deindustrialisation took place across the UK in favour of a financial services-driven service industry based in London. This was supposed to be the start of something wonderful. A thread 1/9

It's 2024 and people are still trying to pretend that GERS figures have any bearing on the finances of an *independent* Scotland 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

1. How and why did the racist riots happen, and what do they tell us about where we might be heading? This thread concerns one part of the answer, the formation of what the historian Arno Meyer called a “crisis stratum” of disillusioned young men. 🧵

If anybody wants to know why Gen X is always mad, it's because we had to replace our record collections with a tape collection that we had to replace with a CD collection that we had to replace with an MP3 collection, and now we need a subscription to listen to music.

A big part of the statement today will be politics with lots of discussion about whose fault this all is. While the size of the Scottish Budget is still mostly determined by decisions at Westminster, issues with the SG's budget planning are also part of the story.

When Keir Starmer wanted votes he was on the side of pensioners struggling to stay warm in winter. As PM, Starmer is on the side of big business, banks and the super wealthy. The real Keir Starmer is a tory. He has destroyed Labour.

10 years ago, at the time of the referendum, Westminster told Scots that if we voted Yes, we would be an economic basket case. 10 years later, Westminster has turned the whole of the UK into an economic basket case. I believe that Scotland could have done much better on its own.

Labour were out of power for 14 years. The morning after they won the election with a massive majority they woke up and launched all out war on pensioners and children. History will not be kind.

They want to leave the ECHR because it will allow them to abolish the State Pension, the Minimum Wage, and paid holiday and sick leave. It would make them tens of billions a year. But of course they say immigration, because they can't tell you the real reason.

Starmer's creating a £22 billion black hole today. It's called investment in carbon capture and storage. This is an unproven technology whose only purpose is to permit fossil fuel to still be burned. And he's fallen for it. Is that foolishness, stupidity or corruption in play?
