I had a great conversation with Terrence McCauley, host of the podcast Spies, Lies, and Private Eyes, about my work and writing historical crime fiction. Enjoy! loom.ly/TManBP4 #AuthorInterview

I always read two books concurrently, one fiction and one nonfiction. For fiction right now it is Patrick O’Brian’s maritime masterpiece HMS Surprise. My nonfiction book is a wonderful volume by Alistair Moffat titled Before Scotland. #Fridayreads #Bookrecommendations

In my Bone rattler series, I go to great lengths to reflect the incredibly diverse population of colonial America, i.e. my core characters include not only elites of the day but also rebellious females, wise old Native Americans, slaves, Jewish immigrants, and indentures Scots.

I loved Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander series and hope that Freedom’s Ghost and the Bone Rattler series take readers on the same thrilling journey, offer riveting historical adventures that embed readers in the clashes and intrigue of the American Revolution.

I recently sat down with Lisa Towles, award-winning crime novelist and host of Story Impact, to talk about the power of storytelling and the historical forces that shape my novels. Watch the full conversation here: youtube.com/watch?v=NR9dgb…

For me, storytelling is about taking readers on a journey—whether through the rugged Tibetan mountains or the untamed American colonies. My books are about history, but more than that, they’re about people who refuse to be silenced. Which of my books has stayed with you the most?

I’ve always been drawn to exiles—those cast out but never broken. Inspector Shan is a prisoner of the Chinese state, yet he seeks justice where others dare not. Duncan McCallum is sentenced to servitude, yet he refuses to be a mere pawn of empire.

Writing is an immersive experience for me, and music plays a huge part in that. The right soundtrack transports me to the landscapes of my stories—whether it’s a Tibetan monastery or the Scottish Highlands. What music would you pair with my books?

Every book I write feels like stepping into a different world. When it comes time to edit, I have to pull myself out of one and back into another. It’s like working on two jigsaw puzzles at once. Writers—do you love or dread the editing process?

I’ve always believed that fiction can shine a light on hidden truths. My novels uncover the forgotten corners of history, from Tibet’s struggle under Chinese rule to the untold stories of colonial America. What’s a piece of history that fascinates you?

Fiction isn’t just an escape—it’s a way to understand the world in new ways. Many readers have told me that my books changed how they see Tibet, colonial America, and the struggles of those who fight injustice. Has a novel ever opened your eyes to a new truth?

Corrupt judges. Ruthless police. Oppressive rulers. Shan and Duncan don’t just solve mysteries—they challenge entire systems of power. Their journeys remind us that justice isn’t always about the law—it’s about the truth. Who’s your favorite literary truth-seeker?

One must go through the trial and errors of life, in all of its beautiful chaos, with eyes wide open. We spectate our failures and mistakes, but in doing so, learn great lessons from them. Share your lessons. #BeautifulGhosts

Such kind words from Beth Kanell from the New York Journal of Books. I'm happy to see my retellings of untold history have be well-received. Please share any excerpts from #FreedomsGhost you took a liking to. 🔖

Sometimes overthinking can bring about the greatest calm. When I spend time toiling away at my writing desk, I find peace at the end of a finished novel. Is there any semblance of peace you've thought long and hard to achieve? 🕊️ #TheSkullMantra

Certainly the number of humans cut off from nature has grown exponentially since the 18th century. How has this affected the growth of the human spirit? We humans evolved to take feedback from nature, in deep, intuitive ways I think we do not fully understand... #TheKingsBeast
