When teachers quit by the hundreds of thousands, the problem isn’t teachers. It’s a system that doesn’t value and support their work.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: Don't wait until Sept to talk about Latinx topics. Don't wait until Nov. to talk about Indigenous people. Don't wait until Feb. to talk about Black history. Don't wait until June to talk about queer folx. We exist all year round.

The problem with "teacher shortage" is its passivity. It's as if we've mysteriously landed here & not due to devaluing us. Then, you blame teachers. This is inaccurate. "The most oft-cited reason for a lack of interest in teaching is low teacher salaries." (EPI, 2022)

Screen time is one of the things I get asked about most. Usually parents want to know how to limit it most effectively. It won't be a surprise to those who know me that I come from a different angle. Here's a blog I wrote for Mozilla about it. blog.mozilla.org/en/internet-cu…

Every year, Native parents share photos of these "naming" projects they are asked to do. Teachers: stop doing this. It trivializes something of tremendous significance to Native families and communities. It isn't cute. It isn't educational. IT IS WRONG.

Buy art for your wall or jewelry for your body that is created by Native people, but do this, too: Buy children's and young adult books created by Native people! They tell damn good stories, AND, they interrupt the stereotyping and bias that is pervasive in children's bks.

My guess: most people can name one Native author, partly because their book is on just about every banned book graphic they see. Fact: there' s a recent surge of excellent bks by Native writers and they're getting challenged and banned. Read these books! Share them!
