When you're annoyed by scientific names as a communicator, here's an example where they come in handy. There are (at least) 3 sharks, 4 rays/skates, and 1 chimera called leopards including Obscure Shark 15, this gorgeous leopard catshark (Poroderma pantherinum). #DiverseSharks

🎵🚨 Well, I’m hot blooded, check it and see…🎵🚨 Despite always been known as being cold blooded, basking sharks are actually regionally endothermic like their close relatives great whites! 🔥🦈🔥 Check out my second PhD chapter here: doi.org/10.3354/esr012…

All sharks have loosely attached jaws that give them a little extra reach, but Obscure Shark 18, the Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) takes this to the extreme…probably because of the ironing board on their face. #DiverseSharks

🚨A new study has revealed that #overfishing is pushing sharks, especially 5 species of reef sharks, towards #extinction and is also changing how #coralreefs function, due to their important role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Article by Melissa Cristina Márquez: bit.ly/46RxuY1

Obscure Shark 27 doesn’t look so unusual, buy where it lives is surprising. Glyphis glyphis is a spp of river shark, a little known genus that seem to spend most their lives in tropical river systems & estuaries. They are considered critically endangered. #DiverseShark #SharkWeek

Obscure Sharks 28(?): are the walking sharks of the genus Hemiscyllium, including the Epaulette Shark. They use large ventral vins like limbs to crawl around the bottom, even up and out of tidal pools. #DiverseSharks #SharkWeek

Sharks have a reputation as ‘swimming noses’ - but just how well can they smell? In episode 43, @isla_hodgson is in conversation with Dr. Lauren Eve Simonitis 🇨🇺🇺🇸, a biologist who is interested in how sharks manage all their senses, especially smell. saveourseas.com/worldofsharks/… Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS)

Vulnerability assessment of Indo-Pacific non-marine sharks & rays. Large-bodied euryhaline species most vulnerable. Assessment had strong congruence with IUCN extinction risk assessments. Framework designed to be applied to other freshwater cons contexts👍 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10…
