Huge shout-out to Mountain Hydrology Research Group for crushing it during UW Engineering's Engineering Discovery Days! At their #SciComm station, they show how IR cameras can be used to measure snow temp by taking IR portraits! Mustache insulation study in my future? Maybe!
Just finished two amazing Skype A Scientist with 6th grade classrooms at Team Tigers CMS! I always enjoy practicing my #SciComm around #permafrost and #climate. Lots of permafrost-virus questions! One about Washington Football alumni MichaelPenisSZN 🇦🇺 going to the Atlanta Falcons 😂.
I am currently in the Peruvian Amazon with Becca Neumann and Robin Ruhm helping with fieldwork exploring where mercury contamination from illegal gold mining is going, and potential negative effects on photosynthesis. Enjoy some views from the rainforest!
The Peruvian Amazon is exceptionally resilient. The forest feels powerful, impossibly dense, and ever changing. Data from Becca Neumann and Robin Ruhm suggest mercury from gold mining reduces the ability of the forest to photosynthesize, reducing both resilience and carbon uptake.
UW doctoral student Joel Eklof has been investigating which environmental factors contribute to permafrost thaw and the release of methane into the atmosphere. For years, Eklof has traveled to a field site southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska. washington.edu/news/2024/05/2…
New paper in Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research of the 1st global study on permafrost-agroecosystems, any ag activity like crops cultivation + animal husbandry in permafrost areas. Funding includes International Permafrost Association #NSF Permafrost Grown and #EU Horizon 2020 CHARTER Project. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
During my recent fieldwork to the Alaskan Interior, UW News used media and audio I recorded to make this video highlighting my work! Questions about #permafrost, #climatechange, or #scicomm? You know a guy! Thanks, Sharing Science and AGU Science Policy for #Voicesforscience training!
Joel Eklof Joel Eklof, a UW Civil & Environmental Engineering doctoral student, has been conducting research in Alaska for the past 5 years to determine which environmental factors contribute to permafrost thaw and the release of methane into the atmosphere. More: washington.edu/news/2024/05/2…
Meet Joel Eklof (Joel Eklof), a PhD Candidate at University of Washington turning his passion for Alaska’s #permafrost into actionable science. ❄️ As a member of AGU’s #VoicesforScience, Joel advocates for science-driven policy and took his expertise to Capitol Hill this year. 🌊 (1/7)
I've loved my AGU #VoicesForScience journey! It has been wonderful learning to communicate my science and education and outreach work more effectively. Thanks for the feature, AGU (American Geophysical Union) ,AGU Science Policy, & Sharing Science! I highly recommend the program! #Scicomm #shareyourscience
