The UN has established the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan (IIM-A) to collect and preserve evidence of war crimes & serious violations in Afghanistan — a major step, but with big challenges ahead. Ehsan Qaane takes a look. bit.ly/4qM1kXN

The IIM-A is not a court, not an ICC “branch office”, and not a prosecution office. Like IIIM for Syria and IIMM for Myanmar, it’s an evidence hub: collecting, preserving and analysing material so courts may act in future. I unpack its mandate, limits and politics here ⬇️

The IIM-A is a bridge mechanism that works "in complementarity with" other mechanisms. I’m eagerly awaiting 11 Dec in The Hague, when the People’s Tribunal for Women of Afghanistan issues its final judgement. Symbolic, yes, but vital: it centres Afghan women’s voices, names gender persecution (and gender apartheid), and pressures states/ICC to act.
