March has arrived, and that has many of us thinking about tasks to do in the garden 🧑‍🌾 Will you be growing dahlias this year? 🌼

Stonehenge is a unique structure surrounded by mystery. There have been many theories over the years about its purpose and how the stones were raised. 🔮 What is the strangest theory you've heard about how Stonehenge was built? 🤔

#DYK that in the 1950s steel rods were inserted into one of the upright sarsen stones at Stonehenge to prevent it from breaking? 🩹 One of the extracted stone cores can be found in two pieces at The Salisbury Museum 👀

Some Victorian microscope slides in Wiltshire Museum have recently been used as part of a project to identify the origins of the stones at Stonehenge 🗺️ Made for William Cunnington III between 1876 and 1881, these slides contain geological thin sections of the stones.

What was this area like before Stonehenge? 🤔 Cereal crops and livestock were first brought to this part of Britain at the start of the Neolithic period, 1,500 years before the stones were erected. 🌾🐄 The early farmers here built burial mounds and other mysterious monuments.

This model in The Salisbury Museum was produced by William Osmond (1791-1875) based on plans drawn by William Stukeley. William Stukeley surveyed Stonehenge during the 18th century. He concluded that it was a Druid monument rather than Roman or Danish as others had suggested. 🔎

A view of Stonehenge that our ancestors could only dream of 😍 The giant sarsen stones have been a part of this landscape since about 2500 BC. They were undoubtedly placed to line up with the movements of the sun. ☀️ Have you ever attended a solstice event here?"
