The US defense apparatus like everything else in US acts in its own interest and through the flood of $ has captured political process. That is less so in Europe but the risk is present

Wonderful to see the landmark studies on MRT. After two decades of basic research, public conversations, regulatory steps, government support, mitochondrial replacement is used successfully on multiple patients to prevent mitochondrial disease.

Very welcome news that the grant funding at Columbia, including my own R01 is back. But it comes at a huge cost. The 200M fine Columbia is paying undermines independence, and limits the freedom of constituents to push back on government on any issue, a concerning development.

And the big ones are retreating at a scary pace. Morteratsch glacier extended till here in 2015. Can you see it now? Its end is behind the sunny rocky lump in middle. So much meltwater! Pictures 8/16

Foolish but honest: rebranding the Department of Defense as the Department of War is a wonderful admission — war itself has a purpose in the US political system, and we get to pay for it. Who could declare it better than our government? nice job 👍

Sad to hear about the passing of David Baltimore. We lost a giant who was here from the early days of the molecular biology revolution. From the Asilomar conference on recombinant DNA to heritable gene editing, he remained an important voice. I never met him, but his impact will

A rather cool reception of the latest gene editing efforts by WSJ and relevant commentators. Evident that necessary data are not yet available. But I don’t think drawing parallels to past events apply nor are they necessary.

1,019 glaciers have disappeared since 1973 in Switzerland! 🔥🧊 This represents >40% of the glaciers inventoried in 1973 and accounts for 13% (47±3 km²) of total glacier area loss! ✝️ But as it is based on the latest inventory (2016), the actual figures are far much higher! 📈
