Today was a good day in that I encountered for the first time Paper Rad's video for Bubble Puppy's 'Hot Smoke And Sasafrass.'

Every once in a while I'll think about all the amazing tracks I heard while tripping my ass off at '90s warehouse raves and lament that I'll never find out what they were.

your new favorite band is coming to a town near you (ideally) -

'[...] extraordinary music, which alchemizes a few of the finest rock strains—space, kraut, and shoegaze—into songs that massage your mind and tingle your body with subtle insistence.' - The Stranger 🗞 / Dave Segal

Note to Warner Music Group: The grumpy old folks who buy deluxe versions of Captain Beefheart albums we already own don't want gimmicky color variations. Thanks for your attention to this unimportant matter.

Sly Stone's “Rock Dirge” never appeared on a proper album and was only issued as a 7” on a label called “Woodcock” (this was its only release), yet it's been sampled at least 18 times.

Early in his career, Kenny G was a decent funk musician in the Seattle music scene. He should've stuck with that genre. Sure, he'd be much more obscure and poorer, but at least he wouldn't have become a figure of global ridicule.

If you're in Seattle tonight, glide through Jupiter Bar, where Mike Nipper and I are spinning little-known classics on vinyl and styrene.

There's an incredible epic piece on Lithic Records' Realms And Ruins Volume I comp by Tad Doyle . Read my review of that collection and the new La Luz album on The Stranger 🗞's blog.

La Luz will release their new album on Sub Pop Records on May 24 and Dave Segal says it's full of transcendent shoegaze and edgy, spacey avant-rock. 👽🎸💫

Plus: A little love for the new experimental compilation from PNW label Lithic Records.

Listen up!

Wouldn't think that Roxy Music turning the Byrds' “Eight Miles High” into a slinky Euro-disco joint would work so well, but it sure enough does. Their version certainly tops Leo Kottke's [see previous tweet on the subject].

The only reason Deerhoof can afford to continue is bare-bones touring, one crew, tiny equipment, self-produced records, and we didn't have kids. Even so, our income hovers near the poverty line every year. I don't understand how newer artists do it.
