The founders and judges of the Walter Scott Prize are profoundly saddened by the death of Hilary Mantel. Dame Hilary won the Prize twice: for Wolf Hall in 2010, and for The Mirror and the Light in 2021, and was a warm, gracious and generous winner. How we will miss her.

I only had the honour of meeting Hilary Mantel once, but it was an experience I‘ll never forget. She truly was the queen of historical fiction, whose poetry parted the seas of the past. I’m sure somewhere, Hilary Mantel and Thomas Cromwell will be sitting down for a long talk.

I just received this gorgeous copy of Poems for Innerpeffray Library, a collection of poetry and photographs celebrating Scotland’s oldest library. It also features a few of my own poems. You can buy a copy here innerpeffraylibrary.co.uk/shop/shop/book… All proceeds go to supporting the library.

'A great friendship story, fascinating, intricate and hopeful' - that's Hilary McKay's verdict on Hannah Foley's new novel and my goodness, Hilary knows a thing or two about brilliant storytelling. Hilary McKay

What a tough decision for #WalterScottPrize judges in developing this year's shortlist – here's a peek behind the doors of the shortlisting meeting room. Q: Who do you hope to see on this year's shortlist from our longlisted titles? #HistoricalFiction

It’s a lovely collection with wonderful illustrations. I’d highly recommend. (I wrote about Sir Walter Scott having writer’s block...)

Two years ago, I wrote ‘A Hundred Histories’, about Sir Walter Scott as he travels 600 years back in time to write his novel Ivanhoe. Tom Morgan-Jones managed to capture the entire concept in one wonderful illustration. You can get a free copy here: bit.ly/WSPcontact

Snare Wednesday. Wolf had loped down to the river to have a quick splash about. It was very high & part of the garden was flooded. The water was cold as ice & clear as the spring sky & Wolf suddenly thought he could see scattered silver coins in the weeds, but they were just worn

Congratulations to Ellie and Rosie on their historic achievement! I’m excited to read their work. It’s lovely to see my story White Fox featured as a runner-up. I’ve grown such a love for historical fiction since first entering. Every year it’s wonderful to see the prize unfold.

My story ‘White Fox’ is now available to read online, alongside a lovely illustration by Tom Morgan-Jones. It’s set in 9th-century Hokkaido, Japan, during a winter of spirits and shapeshifters.

When I was eleven, I did this drawing of Stampy Cat. This year, I made two new Lovely World pictures — a watercolour of Stampy Cat and his pack, and a drawing of Sherbet with his new friend. 🧁

I had the chance to write a short piece for The Guardian, discussing the books I read in September. I wrote it on the train home from London, after a long day at the BBC. Philip Reeve theguardian.com/books/2023/sep…
