As our Gullah Geechee elders say: 'However far the stream flows, it never forgets its source.'

On 5/4, COMBEE goes back to the source, back to Green Pond, SC where my Dad was born & where the Combahee River Raid took place.

I am a granddaughter of the Great Migration & the Gullah Diaspora. In my deepest 💙, a desire to discover a history that my Dad, his family & all Gullah Geechee folks, could be proud of (West African rice, Harriet Tubman & the Combahee River Raid) is a motivation of my research.

Wil Haygood, author of 'The Butler: A Witness to History' was my instructor at a summer nonfiction workshop sponsored by ✍🏾 Hurston/Wright Foundation for Black Writers before I knew I was writing COMBEE. It was transformative to my storytelling. There would be no COMBEE without Wil Haygood and ✍🏾 Hurston/Wright Foundation for Black Writers!
