Often, I have been asked why people do not collect and make money from the plastic in the river, I tell them it is a hard & expensive task to do . Yesterday, I challenged myself- got into the water for one hour to see how much of the recyclable plastic waste I’d be able to gather

I am excited to have joined key stakeholders in a meeting to establish a working group to end plastic pollution in Kenya, made possible by Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry and CEJAD KENYA. This is coming at a time the world is negotiating an internationally legally binding plastic treaty.

I was privilege to make my contribution during a multi stakeholder platform to promote policy discussions on particular themes around ending plastic pollution in 🇰🇪 . This was in line with the ongoing #INC on global #plastictreaty. And our priority was clear; let's 🔚 this.

You can recycle plastic once or twice but more than that it's almost impossible...sooner, that plastic will have no better way to treat other than just burning it- which is extremely bad for the environment. There's actually no environmentally safe way to manage plastic waste.

The global consumption of plastic bottles in 2016 is estimated to have been 500 billion, or 1 million each minute. This increased by 20% by 2021. Globally, less than half of them are collected for recycling, and only 7% are turned into new bottles.

The fragmented nature of current plastic governance allows for too many loopholes for industry actors wanting to deflect responsibility, and that market-based instruments have done little to curb plastic pollution.

While some #policies and environmental #campaigns have realized a number of successes in different jurisdictions, they have not come close to keeping pace with the exponential increase in plastic waste on the global level. #plasticwaste #PlasticsTreaty #plasticpollution

The heterogenous plastics policies are “leaky by design.” This is evident in the ways that regulatory loopholes are exploited by producers, users, and those responsible for disposal to escape efforts to prevent ecological and human damage. #plasticpollution #plastictreaty #waste

Addressing open burning of plastic wastes harm will require interventions at the level of not just disposal, creation of affordable, reliable, & effective trash collection & end-stage processing alternatives that build upon local capacities, but also at the level of production.

Our organization, ecorethink, partnered with environmental groups and residents of Nakuru for a cleanup and waste management sensitization event at Kaptembwa Estate to commemorate #WorldCleanupDay2024. This year, the majority of the litter we collected consisted of plastic

The sudden disappearance of a destination for the majority of globally traded #waste has drawn attention to #inadequate waste management systems in the US and Europe, which are failing to cope with the increased volumes of materials requiring domestic processing. #pollution
