As lockdown restrictions were eased in Q3, compared with the strict lockdown seen in Q2, economic activity picked up. In Q3, the South African economy emerged from #recession as q/q seasonally-adjusted #GDP growth picked up sharply to 66.1% in the period, from -51.7% in Q2.

The headline CPI #inflation rate declined to 3.1% y/y in December, from 3.2% y/y in November. This outcome is in line with consensus expectations.

The #unemployment rate has risen to a new record high of 32.5% in Q4 2020, from 30.8% in Q3 2020. These figures illustrate how the impact of #lockdown has had a devastating effect on unemployment in the country. Recovery in employment is likely to be prolonged.
