Happy #NationalPollinatorWeek! European/Western honey bees were imported to the U.S. from Europe in the 17th century for honey production and crop pollination. They still play a large part in many crop systems today, such as this bee pollinating avocado trees in California.

Summer in N. America and many flying insects have emerged for mating! 2 groups you may see near water are dragonflies like the halloween pennant (left) and damselflies like bluets (right). Comparatively, damselflies have slimmer bodies and smaller eyes w/more separation b/w them.

Here’s an African Elephant calf for #WorldElephantDay! Just like human infants, elephant calves can be a little awkward and don’t quite know what do do with their trunks at first—they can step on them or even just swing them around sometimes! #wildlife #Africa

Happy #Nationalhummingbirdday! This female ruby-throated hummingbird will aggressively defend nectar sources such as this orange jewelweed from other hummingbirds to meet her high daily energy demands. #wildlifephotography #birdphotography #pollinators

A few photos from some of my favorite wildlife encounters of 2020. Here’s to us all being able to get out and explore more in 2021! Clockwise from left: Eastern kingbird on nest, eastern box turtle, barred owl, and halloween pennant.

Happy #WorldMigratoryBirdDay2021! This is a male yellow-rumped warbler I came across several days ago by a stream. Peak spring migration for neotropical migrants ends in the next few days, but there will still be lots of movement through end of May! #birds #NaturePhotography
