Will turbo chooks survive changes in habitats in Tasmania? According to Lucile Lévêque from University of Tasmania & D.E.E.P. Group, they will be around for long thanks to the use of human-dominated landscapes. #ESAus21

New paper by Alexandra Paton Jessie Buettel and me (Barry Brook) on comparing inference made from camera-trap surveys versus finding animal poops, in Australian temperate forests: "Evaluating scat surveys as a tool for population and community assessments" publish.csiro.au/wr/WR21056
Welcome our newest member, PhD student Alejandra Gutiérrez! 👋 Alejandra will be using #bird surveys and camera traps to understand how Tasmanian bird communities respond to different pressures like land use, fire severity and human settlements.🦉 University of Tasmania Sciences and Engineering at University of Tasmania Postgraduate Society for Biological Sciences
Another new addition to the DEEP group this year is PhD student Laura Maria Cardona! 👋 Laura's project aims to understand the responses of #mammal species to human presence in protected areas across Tasmania.🦘 University of Tasmania Sciences and Engineering at University of Tasmania Postgraduate Society for Biological Sciences
A profile of our ongoing work. "Wildlife cameras help researchers understand Tasmania's native wildlife and feral species". Jessie Buettel and Alexandra Paton were also featured on the new on multiple channels and all the local newspapers. Go University of Tasmania ! abc.net.au/news/2022-02-0…
D.E.E.P. Group It is great to see the work of DEEP in the spotlight! Years of effort here by Barry Brook and Jessie Buettel, as well and all the members of the DEEP group who have developed machine learning methods, serviced camera traps, and sorted through thousands of images!
Excellent to get coverage on the camera trapping network that Barry Brook and I, alongside many from the D.E.E.P. Group team Sciences and Engineering at University of Tasmania have been labouring over the last 4 years!!

The best fur-plucking episode we’ve seen so far on our remote cameras! Went for about 30 min (and 2 separate instances). Near Savage River, Tasmania. Barry Brook
I did an interview with the lovely Robyn Williams for the ABC's Science Show a few weeks back, talking about my work monitoring feral cats in Tasmania. It provides a good summary of my PhD goals and feelings about pet cats😺 D.E.E.P. Group #CatsOfTwitter abc.net.au/radionational/…
Honestly thought the feather boas would be the worst lure, but so far they are yielding some of the best pics. #CatsOnTwitter #Wildlife #Research D.E.E.P. Group
