I've been reflecting a lot on appropriate expectations recently. I like these from Singapore for children aged 6-7, so by the end of our year 1 / start of year 2.

โ€œSo it's finally happened. As the last qualified teacher in a Nursery in our MAT, I'm being replaced by someone with a Level 3 in childcare from September. Obviously our poor little 3/4 year olds with very high levels of need in a deprived area don't need a teacher I am guttedโ€

I hope all the โ€œfree childcareโ€ advocates know whatโ€™s coming. A level 3 in โ€˜childcareโ€™ does not make a pedagogue. And now someone with this same level 3 and 6 months experience will be able to decide to count someone unqualified as qualified. #childrensrights Early Education and Childcare Coalition

Spectacular success with pupils developing addition strategies of Counting On and Making Ten. The magic really happens when you hide things - like in this example from Early Childhood Maths We hid cubes in plastic cups or dropped them in 1 by 1 making a noise. youtube.com/watch?v=J7GhH7โ€ฆ

Our article on the Spatial Reasoning Toolkit is out: doi.org/10.1177/107621โ€ฆ Most practitioners find the Toolkit "very useful" or "extremely useful". Includes three case studies from users of the Toolkit. Early Childhood Maths For more on spatial reasoning: vimeo.com/882570233

Kate Johnston University of Strathclyde This is both fascinating and useful - anecdotally this has been evidenced but good to see the research. Early Childhood Maths has guidance coming out soon on teaching maths in mixed-year group (composite) classes; Debunking some myths and offering practical guidance.

Personally I think Ofsted would do everyone a favour if they stopped publishing reports for a bit and focused on getting their own house in order. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
