Temme’s talk brought question from robin bk on what IBM meant by “quantum utility” as they claimed to have demonstrated in their paper. To me the key question is whether “advantage” is required to claim “utility” ? #SEEQA24

The subtext is the suggestion that you can claim “advantage” even the quantum instances demonstrated are slower than the classical ones. What you care about, Daniel suggests, is the scaling! He (rightly) expects this definition of advantage to be contentious.

Planted noisy kXOR as a rigorous algorithm that shows how guiding states can give large (quartic and bigger) speed ups, parallels with chemistry problems and ground trial states are made. Schmidhuber @ #SEEQA24

Fascinating talk from Babbush on a new class of quantum algorithms that use decoders as subroutines (run on superposition). Great final talk for the conference. #SEEQA24

Quieter week in the office as many of the riverlaners have headed to IEEE quantum week. I’ve never been and am curious what it is like. Perhaps I will go next year. What’s it like?

(1/2) How can we address the gender imbalance in the quantum computing industry? 🤔 This is a question we ponder a lot at Riverlane and it guides many of our initiatives.
