“Would a republic, whose foundation stones are laid upon enslaved human beings, persons, men, women and children, be recognized and respected by a single civilized nation of the world?

…the whole world would cry out against and despise it.”

Before the 1863 PA gubernatorial election Battery M, 2nd PA Artillery passed political resolutions supporting Andrew Curtin:

“Resolved, That in the spirit of true Patriots, ready and willing, if need be, to sacrifice all, even life itself in the sacred cause of freedom…” 🧵

I highly suggest checking out UGA Press’ “History in the Headlines” series. They’ve done a great job of contextualizing current issues and gathered an amazing group of historians to do so. Dr. Jim Downs’s edition arrived yesterday. Pumped.

I always forget that Bill Scranton was the chairman of the Campus Unrest Commission in 1970 in the wake of Kent State. This is a WILD document to read now.

“The Stars and Stripes that have floated so proudly for many long years over our once happy land are being torn to pieces, shot from their staff, burnt to ashes, buried beneath the soil…We will place slavery at the head of the dark list of causes.” 1/2

There are a few local spots that sell the most wild chip flavors ever and taste testing all of them has become a thing with my friends and I.

Give me a crawfish boil everyday, but don’t give me these ever again.

“On the great question…and the question which underlies it, the question of the rightfulness of slavery, no imprejudiced man and sincere believer in the political axioms upon which our government is founded can have but one opinion. Slavery is wrong.”

Happy Friday, folks.

You know it’s state testing time when you get back to your classroom and it’s littered with Jolly Rancher wrappers.

EJ What's this? I thought by 1863 the war changed and the North was fighting to end slavery? Are you meaning to tell me this is not the case and they never actually cared about ending slavery at all?

“…and religious-of the country are all against it; & while I would prosecute the war solely and entirely for the purpose of putting down this rebellion, if slavery happens to go along with it, I will hold up both my hands & cry amen to putting them both down.” - Daniel Dickinson
