RSPB GELTSDALE NATURALISATION Super and informative film of the excellent work completed by the RSPB at Geltsdale thansforming a 1.5 m wide straight farm ditch into a wetland mosaic. Even the smallest of flows can transform a landscape... youtube.com/watch?v=R65ZUo…

This is what it's all about! Dozens of Martins at Brerachan only days after the chute driven flowing wetland rejuvenation work. Nice video of the construction process here too: linkedin.com/posts/mcgowan-…

A recent GoogleEarth image of the seasonal palaeo-route reconnection on the River Sprint completed a couple of summers back. The increased wetting frequency has resulted in a significant morphological and ecological response. Small targetted intervention - BIG positive response!

Do we need Beavers everywhere to create dams? Ambitious use of LARGE wood sees keystone trees capture smaller wood and organics damming and diverting flow...

A low sun highlights the density of sheep tracks in this field. Measured hoof pressure is ≈200 Kpa when they are moving. An unloaded tractor exerts 60-80 Kpa. Compaction increases the chance of surface runoff and given with ever more extreme rainfall means BIGGER FASTER FLOODS.

New fencing along a clearly eroding river bank. How much more pointless could you get? Absolute waste of (probably public) money...

6965 data points linking temperate alluvial channel river width to bankfull discharge. The log scales disguise the extreme variation in these data. Such variability is natural and needs to be incorporated into restoration design, even on the small scale that we generally work at.

More data illustrating just how variable our rivers are. The graph looks at the link between bankfull discharge and the 'magic' 2 year return period flow. A relationship is there for sure but it is not perfect. We should restore with this variability in mind.

ARE OUR RESTORATION EFFORTS TOO EXPENSIVE?This paper, in the Journal Sustainability, suggests 1 ha of river restoration in Europe currently costs £260,000, returns on this are £6,500 a year. The math suggests a 40 year break even point. Quite a long time! academia.edu/58907854/Statu…

Greene et al. hit the nail on the head when it comes to river restoration, revealing the flaws is restoring to some mythical former perfect state and arguing instead for restoring structural and functional heterogeneity. Take a look here: academia.edu/115401104/We_c… via Academia

Not good for the frog but this floodplain wetland, created through simple reconnection of Whale Beck is an amphibian haven and is attracting numerous wading birds including Great Egret. They appreciate it, why shouldn't we! Well done Eden Rivers Trust Lowther Castle & Gardens Env Agency NW

Serious river restoration funding 'delays' (read cuts) highlighted on the BBC this morning. Disasterous for the environment, flooding and the fight against climate change which will ultimately impact us all. Government cuts by stealth, ill-thoughtout and simply idiotic.

We can debate the pros and cons of river restoration approaches but nature is the ultimate arbiter. These sand martins appear pretty happy with this chute channel work completed recently by Tyne Rivers Trust on the River Rede but you need to watch it in full screen mode!
