Turning around low performing schools requires narrowing the school’s focus to the one most important measure of its success, its North Star Metric. It requires empowering school staff to make key decisions. Central offices should move from compliance to support. Focus is key.

Yesterday I was speaking with a superintendent about breakthrough performance. She expressed pride in the fact that her 3rd grade reading scores increased two points in each of the last two years—moving from 32 to 36 percent. Would you want your child attending her schools?

What must we do differently, inside the school house doors, to teach all children to read?
