Fertilizer recovery was surprisingly high in annual winter wheat, and was also quite high in the straw, roots, and soils in intermediate wheatgrass. Interestingly, 15N-labeled tracer fertilizer contributed only <3 % to nitrate-N in intermediate wheatgrass the following winter.

We demonstrate that this perennial grain intermediate wheatgrass can reduce harmful nitrogen losses, and I hope we can find more ways to integrate it into our agroecosystems 💚

🌱2 invasive understory species partially downregulate N fixation in response to abundant soil N, in low but not high light conditions. Regardless, fixation remains high with potential nutrient-cycling impacts Colleen B. Schmidt Duncan Menge UCDavisPlants besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…

Great piece by Paul Hond in Columbia Magazine about E3B Columbia work at Black Rock Forest. Some of our lab's work is highlighted, particularly Aria Carreras Pereira's excellent work with mycorrhizal symbioses.
