Happy #BlackHoleWeek! To celebrate, we’re releasing the highest-resolution ray-traced still from one of our simulations to date. This tweet has a low res preview. To zoom into the full 43,200 Γ— 21,600 pixel rendering, head to black-holes.org/2025/05/07/Bbh…

A recent paper led by SXS members Yoonsoo Kim and Elias Most (both at Caltech) is in AAS Nova today! This work explores the formation of strongly magnetized "monster" shocks and a transient "black hole pulsar" state from mergers of a magnetized neutron star and a black hole.

When simulating orbiting black holes, we move our grid with the holes! One of the key lessons of general relativity is coordinates are meaningless. We exploit this to choose comoving coordinates where the metric changes as little as possible. youtube.com/watch?v=j4WGTd…

We are excited to release a major update to our catalog of binary black hole simulations, available at arxiv.org/abs/2505.13378! Such simulations are key to LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA being able to extract science from their gravitational wave detections. 1/14

πŸŽ‰ Paper publication day! πŸŽ‰ This one is now published in CQG: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… The arXiv version arxiv.org/abs/2502.14025 will, of course, remain open access.

A government cutting funding for science and R&D to save money is like a farmer trying to cut costs by not buying seeds for the next season

I updated my notes on the magnetostatic multipole expansion at duetosymmetry.com/notes/magnetos… β€” mainly because Cyril Pitrou found an error (1/2 should have been β„“/(β„“+1)), and pointed me to Damour+Iyer (1991). Sorry for having wrong notes up for so long!
