Sat in an IEP mtg for a S where Ps stood on biz advocating for their S. They had 2 ask 4 steps toward soc and academic progression that should have been part of the plans. Seems faculty forgot about concept of LRE and accoms and mods that can help S achieve. They remember now.

Pay close attention folks. Powerful, influential folks went hard trying to save TikTok yet, very little effort is being made to ensure america’s students can read and write. If that does not scream to you that the push for illiteracy is intentional perhaps you don’t want to know.

Been away for a while to focus on my health. Feeling better. Time to get going before school starts. Got families to serve. ❤️

Ready to remind folks about the reality of public education. Statistically your kids will leave pub edu illiterate. Ignore the petty classroom. Dont be wowed by campus. Trust nothing you are told. SPED?Hoo boy. Please know for yourself your kid is learning or they probably wont.

“We live in a good district.” Outcomes determine how good anything is. If 70% of consumers experience poor outcomes, that’s not good. The schools are pretty, state of the art and in great neighborhoods but it’s not good. When literacy and numeracy rivals sports let’s talk.

There’s 18 months between these writing samples. (There was significant support given for the work on the R based on David’s needs.) He’s doing great developing his own stories. The point is, all Ss can achieve. Will we do what’s necessary to make sure they do?

Listen as David reads the story he is writing. Not only is he learning new words but he also has opportunities to hear possible mistakes in his writing that can be addressed immediately. With the support he needs he is able to achieve. #SPED #autism #Winning #itcanbedone

When the SPED admin tells you (as a first year teacher) to not waste your time on an 8 year old autistic student and his family, ignore them. Thank God for good sense, a great para and a loving grandma who stepped up for that little boy. Today he is winning.

The ultimate illusion of learning. Parents don’t assume that your child is learning because they receive sped services. Statistically they’re not. Many teachers don’t even look at IEP‘s. Know for yourself with your child is learning. Trust nothing you are told. Trust no grades.

A great way to delight your child and know what your child is learning in school is to show up unexpectedly. Plan to show up with a special lunch or treat to enjoy at lunch time with your kid. Let the focus be squarely on your kid for that time you are enjoying lunch.

There is very little, if any, writing by hand in the traditional classroom. Work is largely completed on Chromebooks provided by the schools. Assignments are mostly electronic and are submitted directly to the teacher. Make sure your kids can write with pencil and paper.

Open on paper, March 1, 2020. Off and running with River in 2021. He was a little apprehensive at first, but by the end of the day all was well! I love what I do.

I enjoy making learning, engaging, interactive, and fun for nontraditional learners. Here, I created a space for my kids to rest when they they needed it. On the walls are pictures that can help them tell me how they were feeling if they were having difficulty finding worlds.

Map skills. At Safari kids learn and grow. These students were not limited to just letters and sounds. They were introduced to concepts they would not see for years in the reg class. They thrived. All students can learn when their social and academic needs are met.

Society and the people within continually evolve and change but the traditional classroom remains largely the same. Readers are now scrollers. Technology addiction is a thing. No one should be surprised when kids don’t neatly fit into the mold. We still have to meet their needs.

Parents Ts judge you by how fast you respond to notes/calls, review folders, return homework and attend conferences. If Ts think you don’t care, it affects how much they care. Your child could be shorted in the classroom because of perceived apathy. It’s not right but it’s real.

At Safari Small Schools, in addition to map skills, the kids learned about states within the US. Art, social studies, geography, history and civics all mixed together. Good stuff, fun too! Safari Small Schools

I often challenge parents to have their kids write a persuasive paragraph for a treat or reward. Most parents don’t. One parent did yesterday. Someone I barely knew. She was disappointed in what her gifted and talented 3rd grader produced. It was exactly what I expected sadly.
