Thoughts and prayers are not enough to tackle the gun violence epidemic taking the lives of young Americans who just went back to school. We must pass common sense gun safety laws to keep students safe and alive.

The students at Apalachee HS started school a month ago. Today some won’t come home, because the gun lobby’s profits were prioritized over their safety. These could be your kids. These could be my kids. So I ask what any parent would. “What are we doing about the guns?”

This is a good day to point out that South Carolina had a safe firearm storage bill introduced in the last legislative session. It didn't even get a committee hearing. Just safe storage. Nothing else in this bill. Maybe we can do better next year.
