I just finished my 28th book. After every one, when I’m done with the copy-editing process and I’m sick of reading my own words, I say, “This is crap. No one will read this.” And then, about five months later, when I get the manuscript back, I say “Hey! This is pretty good!”

Akin doesn’t have a closer’s mindset. Nice guy, not a closer. No fire in his belly. Cano has been a disaster out of the pen all year. A sinker ball pitcher that can’t throw it below their waist. A double play specialist who doesn’t get them anymore. He will not return next year.

He has completely lost his focus. When he came in the last couple of years, I used to think, “Here comes the ground ball double play we need!” But now I just grit my teeth and hope, and then he blows the save, the lead, and the game.

What kind of maniac smiles in his mug shot? I’ve seen this many times in my life and during my police career and it still puzzles and horrifes me.
