New article by me and colleagues on why teacher effectiveness research often has small effect sizes (as part of a special issue on the same). We argue that one of the issues is poor conceptualisation of what we mean by teaching and teaching quality. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

In educational research we are often unclear on on our definitions and concepts, which makes it harder to develop a coherent knowledge base.

New preliminary report (very tentative so far) on the link between household income and attainment at school. Income data not a panacea as yet, but full of promise. Some support for findings that poverty attainment is declining somewhat. Watch this space. durham-repository.worktribe.com/output/3959451

Beanie I am more and more convinced that what students think is important for how they respond to their classroom experiences but not for what makes for effective learning. Students consistently express preferences for less successful approaches to learning: bit.ly/3HTleON

An advantage of knowledge-rich curricula over skills-based ones that I haven't seen discussed much is with the former students can see they are making progress—they know things they formerly didn't. When students see they are making progress they are more likely to invest effort.

An analysis of the 2003 and 2007 TIMSS & PIRLS mathematics surveys concludes "better achievement was associated with more teacher-led instruction, less connection to students’ daily lives, and—in particular—more memorizing of formulas and procedure": bit.ly/4eU9N61

👾 POOR PROXIES FOR LEARNING! Just because students are busy, engaged, or writing lots, doesn’t mean they’re learning. Learning happens when students have to think hard! This guide explores poor proxies for learning highlighted by Robert Coe and what to do instead. ⚗️ Read more

This paper by Pietro Sarcassani is a nice illustration of the importance of subject knowledge to teacher effectiveness. In this study of Science teaching he finds that holding a subject degree in the relevant taught science (e.g. Biology, Physics...). sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
