Honoured to win the Screen Essay Award for my research on costume design and making. Huge thanks to Screen's editorial board for their fantastic support and the amazing women who costumed British cinema 🎥 🪡 🧵

I've noticed a recurring phenomenon over the past 100+ years: confused men photographed posing while hovering over women cutters at their benches. I'll start, but I want y'all to add as well. Let's begin in 1916 with the OG editing queen, May Brotherton.

Designed by Edith Head but who made the dress? The skilled costume team at Paramount Studios, inc. many talented cutters and seamstresses, alongside expert beaders and embroidery specialists - typically women, often immigrant laborers from Mexico, Armenia, China etc (Nielson).
