This BBC graphic is a good way to show why reciprocal 25% tariffs will cause prices on some goods to go up far more than 25%. A piston used in a car engine made in Michigan will cross the U.S. border twice, and will be taxed 25% each time. Some products cross more than that.

Trudeau: "I want to speak first directly to the American people. We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally. We don't want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to

In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%. While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired. Let's learn more. 🧵1/10

Trump trying to explain tariffs like he knows anything about them. This is why financial markets are tumbling, because the entire US governing system now has the predominant aim of telling one man that's he's an infallible genius.

Tariffs today lifted tomorrow? Did the stock market just tank or some such? Loss of confidence in the dollar? Absolute clown show of economic (mis)management.

Trump's tariffs could eliminate 25,000 direct UK manufacturing jobs and knock up to 1% off the economy, according to IPPR and Office for Budget Responsibility. Rather than retaliatory measures, the UK needs a clear mission-aligned industrial strategy to build resilience and redirect growth toward

As talks of a UK-US free trade agreement resurface, it’s essential to remember the significant public health concerns raised during previous negotiations. The debate over chlorinated chicken captured headlines, but the implications for public health extend far beyond food safety.

The second more serious objection is the UK is undermining the global trade system by making a deal with Trump that isn't WTO compatible. Clearly the UK has prioritised the US over being a free trade leader. ft.com/content/7e92d3…

Asked the question a few times now - is the UK-US trade deal a Brexit benefit. So far, unequivocally yes. Not available to members until the EU do a deal. So that will make up a microscopic part of the 4% GDP hit.
