Possibly I knew this but I'd forgotten. Radical South African poet Breyten Breytenbach (RIP) was the brother of Jan Breytenbach, head of SA Special Forces during the war in Angola & Cloete Breytenbach, a photojournalist who today we might call 'embedded'. litnet.co.za/breyten-breyte…

What I like about this is the way it marries the Richard Scarry aesthetic with the particularly South African usage of the word 'busy' which doesn't necessarily involve any activity at all.

I can see that posting this cartoon is going to be an annual event. Marking done, scrambling to catch up with journal work, hoping maybe to start writing before Christmas.

Authors who published with Cambridge University Press may have got an email requesting consent for your work to be used in Generative AI licensing agreements. My advice, JUST SAY NO. We know the damage AI is doing to students. A contract signed now will be meaningless in a year.

Glad to see this book published. My chapter shows how the historiography of anticolonial mobilisation & war in #Angola & #Mozambique shifted from Cold War binaries to examine socio-political history & the position of the two states under global capitalism. taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/…

If you have a master's in history & are interested in a PhD particularly on #Angola, #Mozambique or transnational histories of liberation in southern Africa, I'd be interested in seeing your research proposal.

Enjoyed talking about the relationship between MPLA soldiers & ANC liberation fighters in 1980s Angola: more difficult than the official declarations of solidarity would suggest. I argue it fuelled the 1984 MK mutiny. The article will be published in Journal of Southern African Studies early 2026.
