Me in class today: “And so the TikTok ban isn’t really about TikTok. A way we can think about it as looking at the US and China as two companies - I mean countries…” Talk about a Freudian slip.

Finally catching up on the news of the day and listening to bits of the hearing I couldn’t while in class…I’m much less optimistic now.

The irony of the US government arguing in favor of a TikTok ban because they say algorithm-driven propaganda is not protected speech when the entire field of mass communication in the US was founded on the behavioral effects of propaganda is quite something.

also, the US has long exported its own media & cultural propaganda globally, shaping public opinion via Hollywood, news outlets & platforms, making the outcry over foreign influence via TikTok seem less about the ethics of propaganda and more about who controls the narrative 🤔

Hive mind: I’m running an activity in class tomorrow where students do activities on medium-high profile cases of being people being shadowbanned, deplatformed, etc. Send me suggestions of people/cases please!
