REST is NOT a reward. It’s a neurobiological imperative that doesn’t need to be earned. The PARADOX: resting is painful when NOT resting is a way to avoid pain. Start small and expand your window of tolerance…30 seconds, then a minute, etc. NO rest is too little. -Dr.

I don’t think we speak enough about the profound healing power of having and exercising CHOICE for a trauma survivor. This can include seemingly “small” choices, like which restaurant to eat at, what time to schedule a meeting, and how you wear your hair. Exercising choice

Trauma changes the brain. Actually. Quite literally. Maybe this can put into perspective how especially placating it might seem to then tell someone to “just get over it.” -Dr. Jen

Healing changes the brain, too. Actually. Quite literally. It’s NOT a matter of “just getting over our trauma” or “thinking more positively” though. Healing takes time, intention, patience, and the right resources. -Dr. Jen

Let’s sit with someone in their darkest hour without asking them to find a “silver-lining” or feel the “blessing” of their traumatic experience like that’s some kind of cure. -Dr. Jen

Do you actually not have needs, or did you learn as a kid that the less space you took up, the less attention you “demanded,” and the fewer “asks” you had, the more you received the love you craved from your primary attachment figures? -Dr. Jen
