I am legitimately surprised so many people are citing Paul Grahamā€™s ā€œFounder Modeā€ so uncritically. Yes, we know founder-led companies are run better + differently. There are decades of evidence for that. But ā€˜founder modeā€™ is so vague that itā€™s untestable.

The argument for ā€œfounder modeā€ is attractive but suffers from confirmation bias. There are many examples of startups where (after finding demand) the founders hired leaders with relevant experience, delegated, and achieved even more success. Reality is nuanced.

One interesting feature of ā€˜founder modeā€™ is that the founder gets involved in every role/function. Is that not a sign of a bad manager? - if you donā€™t have the intuition to hire the right people, and you subsequently donā€™t trust them to do the job.

Grahamā€™s ā€˜founder modeā€™ seems nebulous. I also wonder how transferable it is to biotech, and what examples we can point to. Many founders are academics with outstanding ideas, but no real world expertise reducing to practice. They need teams of seasoned professionals to execute.

Iā€™ve been thinking for a long time about a problem, but suddenly Iā€™m making a lot of exciting progress by just writing it down and reading the literature. So Iā€™m saying that writing and thinking is crucial for the process. Iā€™m also telling you I have a grant deadline very soon.
