If there was only one scientific practice I could teach to every scientist regardless of stage or field I think it would be: look at the data. Spot check it. Find a few data points and trace them through to see if they make sense. Look at the raw data. Don't just do analyses.

📢'The World Is Your Oyster' is for those who are born in global north countries--don't experience visa bureaucracy & emotional burden that non-white global south scholars do. Citizenship is a privilege that we need to recognize in the academe. 1/n nature.com/articles/d4158…

After the mentorship session ISME - International Society for Microbial Ecology president @PhilHugenholtz kicks of #ISME19. It took almost 47 years for the symposium to come to Africa, it should have been earlier. Next, the opening plenary by Jill Banfield

Unforgettable #ISME19 opening ceremony. As a Black scientist, I'm super proud of the local committee for making it happening. Diversity in science is not just essential, it's powerful.

I am so happy that I could make it to my Third ISME conference #ISME19, and more happy that this time it's in my continent with an opening session that was the closest to my heart. Maybe one day I could be part of the organizing committee to host ISME in Egypt 😉😉.

Incredible opening performance from South African Poet and Playwright Gcina Mhlophe at #ISME19 In times when divisive issues threaten our solidarity, this is all what we need.. to be reminded that we are all connected! Let’s celebrate progress in microbial science together!

Opening ceremony #ISME19 was worth the wait. @Thuls_M emphasised the need for global inclusivity celebrating the milestone achievement of ISME19 - with the largest number of delegates from Africa in any ISME conference. Julia Meltzer

.Casey Hubert highlights the historical problem with naming in science reiterating colonial legacies (for amazing coverage of this, Ed Yong’s 2023 write up! theatlantic.com/science/archiv…) and encourages microbial names do better by including Indigenous voices in naming #ISME19
