Once you understand the patient's goals/values under the given medical condition, it is our privilege as medical professionals to make a recommendation on how to achieve the goal. Don't just ask patients what they want. That is the abandonment of your professional privilege.

Today, on #MLKJrDay we celebrate the legacy and achievements of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His leadership and words have touched the world and have helped to shape a better tomorrow.

This is such a perfect analogy. Also appreciate the recognition that doctors often "dangle a carrot" that we have to realistic expectation of actually happening, often because it is uncomfortable for us and we "don't want to take away hope."

It was an honor to mentor this phenomenal Frisco ISD student who created a patient guide to advocate for relationship-centered #healthcare, ways to promote #healthequity, and a report on #bias language in EHR. bit.ly/3L61xB7 #DEI VitalTalk ACH UT Southwestern Palliative Care

An AMAZING time facilitating Relationship Centered Communication Workshop with Laura Kirk for the UTSW Faculty Wellness Retreat! Energizing to see these skills applied by our Leaders and Division Chiefs and hopeful for the future of UTSW Media Relations.

Be kind to others and to yourself. Kindness is a choice and a conscious effort. At the end of a long day, in the midst of high acuity, or when we are overwhelmed, it is EASY to be mean or dismissive (and to beat ourselves up too). Instead, take a breath and demonstrate grace.

As I return home from a summit focused on relationship centered communication, Juneteenth, and it's relevance, feels particularly renewed.

Amazing talk by Tomoya Akashi on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Orientation Medicine, and the benefits of acupuncture. Definitely got our collective minds running on how our palliative patients could benefit!

Hey #MedTwitter did you know we've never elected a Black doctor as a voting Member of Congress? In an era when anti-DEI initiatives threaten #MedEd do you feel having that voice at the decision-making table is important? I do. #DiversityisStrength 1/3

Loved reading this article on cultivating equanimity in Medicine and healthcare, and what Pitt Med Magazine is doing to support their medical students. ❤️ UTSW Faculty Wellness would love to hear Barry Kerzin for a great visiting speaker?!
