We’re continuing our new feature Centering #Black #Wisdom in #Ecology, highlighting projects that blend Black cultures, values, and knowledge with ecological sciences. Today we highlight Dr. Alicia Foxx and the Black Earth Restoration Collective (BERC). aliciafoxx.github.io/berc/

The goal of BERC is to uplift BIPOC scholars & diverse forms of plant knowledge, including from cultural & lived experience. BERC was inspired to do this work because diverse voices are often ignored in plant restoration spaces because of their proximity to labor.

BERC recognizes that the lack of collaboration and diversity in plant restoration practice, agricultural practice, and academics means valuable knowledge and skills are excluded and the needs of BIPOC community members are often overlooked and unmet.

The collective centers BIPOC perspectives, and is a place for members to discuss, support, and collaborate on topics in plant restoration, such as agriculture and sustainability. Dr. Foxx serves as a board member of BERC along with a diverse team of plant scholars.

I am really honored to have received two of our highest honors at NIU this spring. It has been a pleasure mentoring younger faculty like Jennifer Koop and Pallavi Singh! And the many graduate students who were the engines of the research program for which I was awarded.
