Set the tone from day 1 with your patient: “LET’S figure out what’s causing pain” “WE are going to find a solution” Don’t position yourself as the fixer.

What do people with back pain want from healthcare clinicians? ✅ Understanding of the causes of their pain ✅ Clear and personalised information on prognosis ✅ All treatment options explained (risks & benefits) ✅ Self management strategies pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31227280/

Physiotherapy is a profession not a “treatment” PTs are heath care practitioners with 6+ years post graduate studies #physiotherapy

When a patient asks "how long will it take to get better" Does anyone ask: Well, how much time are you going to commit to a plan? How long will it take to address the multifactorial issues you've told me about? #alongtime

Just to say, physiotherapy is mostly supported self management. There are huge parts to play within that, but thats all it is really. No unicorns, magic bullets or healing hands

I am going to be controversial! Behaviour change principles around health behaviours are more important than specific exercise principles & programming for MSK problems

Receive lots of weird responses when people find out I spent 2+ hrs at the gym….. yet no one bats an eye if I binge Netflix for an entire day.

Why do obese people have higher rates of hand and shoulder arthritis when they dont walk around on their hands? Because #arthritis is not just a condition of excessive loads on joints causing wear and tear! ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

To clarify; I’m a huge proponent of ‘strengthening’ for pretty much every msk condition. We just have no evidence that changes in strength explain more than a very tiny fraction (if that) of clinical outcomes. Maybe new evidence will change this but atm I’m at peace with this.

«You’re so lucky getting to work with people, meeting new people and helping them!!» «Yeah, but you also get empathy fatigued, a constant feeling of not being good enough, not knowing enough and constantly thinking you got it wrong» «Yeah, but it’s fun right!» «So much fun»

Mark Laslett Many new grads (for MSK) think: -You don't need to make a Dx -Exercise type doesn't matter -Just be nice to everyone and get them active (it doesn't matter how) - they'll get better. Bigger fish to fry in undergraduate education

I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t work incredibly hard that is happy with where they’re at. Not saying the system can’t be hacked, just saying I haven’t seen it yet

Throughout 99.9% of human history, the environment forced you to be physical enough to be in robust health by default Todays environment removes physicality, puts food everywhere, & all but ensures that poor health is the default You’ve got to be an outlier to be healthy
