I've written on political dissent & violent policing for 15 years, particularly in NYC. Compared to Tuesday night, I have never witnessed, at the scene of a protest, the use of police power so disproportionate to the type of demonstration taking place. theintercept.com/2024/05/01/nyc…

Strange urge to have a few more drinks before inflicting this on myself.

I don't agree with every slogan of the protests on campus + elsewhere. Some I really dislike. But when people look back they will see this as the moment when a real debate began about university + govt complicity in the oppression of Palestinians. And the protests made it happen.

In 1968, protests at Columbia were bigger and more disruptive. Yet in 2024, the university responded faster and with more violence. The change is due to the militarization of the police and growth of elite private education into more important site of American capital and power.

Minouche Shafik wrote a 2021 book - 'What we owe each other' - where she proposes a reset of the social contract to improve intergenerational fairness.
Then she went to Columbia and brought a notoriously violent police force into that social contract
