The transphobia and homophobia in Ireland won't suddenly end with hate crime legislation - I don't think it will make any difference tbh. It starts with calling out your friends, challenging your biases, and looking at the layers of discrimination that are entrenched here.

Looking to our legal system to solve our problems, when homophobia was illegal until relatively recently, and there is no enforceable measures for quality trans healthcare, is quite short-sighted. Community protection and solidarity is the stuff that will get us through.

Hmmm... hard disagree with much of this. BUT... it does underscore why it is important for academics to engage in knowledge translation, adapt writing styles, and write for other audiences. We have a duty to make our work accessible.
