Excited to share bioRxiv in collaboration with Rachel Fearns at BU in which we determined the cryo-EM structure of the Nipah virus polymerase complex! The complex assembles with a tobacco pipe-like shape with a flexible stem (do you see it?)😃😅biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Another story in four parts. You can surface sterilize used soda bottles and they make GREAT baffle flasks for microbial protein production. Two orders of magnitude in savings and minimal effort to sterilize with dilute bleach + distilled water rinse. RFP in various volumes @ 37C

Now published in JVI, María Ríos Carrasco on the display of sialic acid receptors in the cow mammary gland. #H5N1 2.3.4.4b receptors are abundant, while human-type receptors are absent. Hardly any avian-type receptors in the respiratory tract. journals.asm.org/eprint/VPT3NPW…

Another week another editors’ pick, now out in ACS Infectious Diseases. HKU is quite promiscuous for glycan cores snd only really cares for 9-0-acetylated sialic acids pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

Unfortunately bluetongue serotype 12 has been found in the Netherlands. 20 km to the south of the first farms where BTV-3 was observed the first time. We should find this introduction route and virus source to avoid new outbreaks of Orbiviruses! #btv #blauwtong #bluetongue

New preprint from the team!!! We investigated whether the intrahost diversity of viral infections, together with other genetic and phenotypic predictors, could be used to forecast the success of viral mutations... #machinelearning #viralevolution 1/

I know folks want to focus on the Nature preprint showing bovine #H5N1 is lethal in ferrets 😔 But you should also consider the bioRxiv preprint showing that pre-existing H1N1 immunity ***reduces severity*** with bovine H5N1 in ferrets 😀

What a fantastic preprint is this! --> biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #glycotime reorganization of HA within the virion upon receptor binding... is this why later patch antibodies are so prevalent? Also, watch out for that sialylated mannose in Fig 6 #badglycans

Honored to share that Institut Pasteur du Cambodge worked closely with partners in Vietnam and FAO Asia Pacific #ECTAD to sequence the recent #avianinfluenza infections in #tigers and #leopards. Collaborative efforts ensured #rapidresponse to support global understanding.

Please see this fantastic thread by Lisa Bauer about our recent preprint on the glycan binding properties of enteroviruses. It was great working with her team at Erasmus MC and, of course, with Debby van Riel, as we started this project some years ago. #glycotime
