One of my favourite words is “sonder”, and I think the feeling can be extended further to include animals. Sitting out on the porch at night or talking a walk and becoming aware of how many hundreds of pairs of eyes are sharing the scene with you.

There are two kinds of people: those who endorse the Self-Indication Assumption, and, uh, actually I guess there’s just one kind of person.

People often complains that we can’t build great things anymore, but cruise ships are a startling counterexample. Another good one: 8 out of 10 of the tallest skyscrapers in New York were built in the last ten years. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_t…

I have strong views on the Ted Chiang/can AI be creative issue but I've been waiting for someone to tag my line manager before weighing in.

I’ve spent countless hours over the last year making images on AI (mostly for D&D) and there’s a huge skill curve. Some of that is technical (especially if you’re running models locally) but there’s also an aesthetic curve as well in figuring out what makes a compelling scene.

In my more bong-hit philosophical moments I sometimes wonder whether there might be exotic forms of intelligence inside stellar bodies, eg, magnetic field structures capable of homeostasis and self-propagation.

Just got my Claude Pro account and I’m very impressed with 3.5 Sonnet. So far I’ve found it significantly better for ideation and explanation than GPT-4o. I do miss the voice mode and integrated image generation but I see Claude becoming my go-to for written queries.

“Conan! What is best in life?” Okay I’m not Conan but you can’t beat grilling on your patio with a beer after a day of yard work.

This is one of my all-time favourite viral videos. On the surface it’s a cute and funny clip about making PBJ sandwiches but really it’s about the tyranny of algorithms and why software failures happen. youtube.com/watch?v=FN2RM-…

My friend is an advertising executive. Insanely gifted. We were looking at this advert together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to produce today. I will never forget his answer… 'We can’t, we don’t know how to do it.'
