As a Muslim woman my critiques are often met with the racist rejoinder, “You’re lucky you live in America where you are allowed to speak.” Now watch a major university silence a Muslim valedictorian in a hijab with no sense of irony.

Yes, it’s not guaranteed that People of Color in positions of power are going to use that power to serve POC and other marginalized communities, but don’t use this argument to keep hiring & elevating white people and never giving POC a chance.

Representation matters. So many of us survived these institutions because of that one Chicana/o/e Latina/o/e teacher or professor who saw us, believed in us, and guided the way.
