FontLab 8 Tip: FontAudit FontAudit detects problems in contours instantly (1). There are 29 tests that you can enable or not (2). Fix the problems with the buttons in the panel (3) or in several glyphs at once selecting them and going to the menu Tools > FontAudit.

FontLab 8 Tip: Add a Reference Layer To use another font as a reference, add a new layer using the Layers panel (1), select the glyphs and the font from the open ones (2), and set the new layer as a wireframe and always visible (3). The reference is now visible (4).

FontLab 8 Tip: Tunni Line I Tunni is a virtual line that links two adjacent handles. You turn it on with the shortcut L. It appears in very light blue when the pointer is between the handles (1), in pale blue when the pointer is near (2) and in blue when you click on it (3).

FontLab 8 Tip: Tunni Line II With a double click on it, Tunni line balances the handles and improves the geometry of the curve. If you drag the bigger blue dot, you can freely change the whole curve (4-5). Its name homages its creator. Eduardo Tunni.

FontLab 8 Tip: Larger Guides Guides can have a width. Select the guide and set its width in Property bar (1) or using the Guide panel (2). This kind of guide is very useful to mark overshoot areas (3) and also to indicate the position and size of some diacritics (4). #typography

FontLab 8 Tip: Guide in Half Width I To have a guide in the middle of a glyph width can be very useful. To automatically create one, drag a guide from the vertical ruler (1) and set "width/2" in the value field of Guide panel (2). Typography

FontLab 8 Tip: Not-Saved Indicator When a font is not saved, FontLab shows in light blue the icon in the tabs and also in the window title. As soon as the file is saved, the icons turn gray.

FontLab 8 Tip: Global Mask A Global Mask is a mask that appears in all glyphs, usually a reference used for some glyphs and later erased. Create it by selecting any contour (1) and go to Tools > Mask > Copy to Global Mask (2). Erase it with Tools > Mask Clear Global Mask (3).

FontLab 8 Tip: Select from Miniatures You can double-click the miniatures shown in the Elements panel to select elements or their contours. This works for groups of elements (blue), elements (red), and contours (orange). Especially useful in complex glyphs.

FontLab 8 Tip: Alternative View View panel concentrates options to show, lock and snap to objects (1) and to show/hide visual aids (2). But you can have a second, alternative set up. Just click this small button (3) to commute between the two views.

FontLab 8 Tip: Sidebearing Secrets In Glyph panel, you can set the values for left and right sidebearings. But you're not limited to integers. Add a = before the value to lock it –so changes in contours will not affect the sidebearing (1).

Use a glyph name to link the sidebaring to it. Changes in the origin glyph will automatically affect the linked ones (2). Add Maths to simplify small adjustments. All the basic operations are supported (3).

Finally, add a bar before a glyph name to link the sidebearing to the opposite one (this is, left value is used in right sidebearing, and vice-versa). Especially useful for extended Latin (4).
