⏰New paper "Ecological constraints on highly evolvable olfactory receptor genes and morphology in neotropical bats" out in #EarlyView at Evolution Journal! 🦇👃 Uniting #RNAseq 🧬and diceCT of nose 🩻, how bats find plants 🌿 requires both genes and anatomy. doi.org/10.1111/evo.14…

First, yes, yes you indeed can easily see the olfactory👃 epithelium (OE) in diceCT tissue (classic spectacular result of staining by Matteo Fabbri right there). And yes, the OE looks pitiful in the insect feed-ing bats, but no strong signature after controlling for phylogeny.🤔

The trauma and ramifications of bullying persist for years. Those bullied lose access to their work and face a huge burden to report. Then, when trying to pick up the pieces, they are excluded from conferences and collaborations in favour of the person who bullied them #2022SVP

Sam Giles (@gilespalaeolab) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Formal action against bullies is generally a slap on the wrist. Maybe you lose a grant. But you’re still employed. Still have access to research. Still have collaborators who will support you for the rest of your career. The people who are bullied rarely have any of that #2022SVP

Sam Giles (@gilespalaeolab) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Having a code of conduct and diversity initiatives is meaningless if you won’t take action against bullies. It’s actively harmful to bring people from minoritised backgrounds into an environment where you will not support them. This will not be a safe environment SVP

Sam Giles (@gilespalaeolab) 's Twitter Profile Photo

If you’re attending SVP #2022SVP, think about who isn’t there. Think about the people - often ECRs - who have been bullied. Think about the people who bullied them. Who is able to attend? Who is welcomed back to the conference? And who has been forced out of the field?

Golly what a productive meeting that was!! Fantastic summary & details from Paul about the missions and deliverables for each of the Working Groups. We were able to build out a pretty full Org Chart! We never even got to the Nelson Memorandum. Stay tuned for the next meeting!
