Thousands of Finnish citizens visit Somalia every year (despite our advice against it). Consular emergencies include minors kept in Somalia against their will. MFA Finland 🇫🇮 wants to develop partnership with Somalia in order to protect our young citizens.

I welcome the Ankara Declaration between two neighbours, Somalia and Ethiopia. This is an important step, and a sign of mutual respect and commitment to peace. Appreciation for the role of Türkiye in facilitating this dialogue, central for stability in the Horn of Africa.

Today, together with Ireland In The EU, we hosted a discussion on the conflict in Sudan, focusing on accountability for grave IHL & human rights violations with experts of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, Chair Mohamed Chande Othman and Mona Rishmawi. 1/2

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan remains dire and impact of the conflict devastating. Both the EU and its Member States continue to support efforts, such as those of the IFFM, on the path towards an inclusive peace process and a sustainable peace for Sudan and its people. 2/2

Deep concern over the situation in South Sudan. Finland calls on all parties to exercise restraint and recommit to the Revitalised Peace Agreement. Constructive dialogue is needed to avoid further escalation. Full support to the mediation efforts of EU, UN, AU and IGAD.
