No end to Britain’s financialized welfare system in hands of private equity. Scandalous and so cruel. “How can a child in care cost £281,000 a year? Ask the wealth funds that have councils over a barrel” great piece as usual by ⁦George Monbiot⁩ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Universities are by and large nice places, who by and are supportive and collaborative. We also know the country needs us. However the sector needs to recognise that over this funding issue we are in a street fight.

So what are the impacts of running down universities in England?

Just reading the Office for Students annual report...tl:dr it says that means
- fewer courses,
- fewer places,
- less research
- less contribution to 'local and national economies'.

After two years and 250,000 words of writing a Britain after Brexit newsletter, it's finally time to move the debate on. And so, welcome to 'State of Britain'...every Thursday, 5pm. We'll peer under the bonnet of the British state, and ask how to fix it?

My Times piece for tomorrow is up and asks why, if the economy is recovering strongly, exports and imports are both falling, as is employment, with unemployment and inactivity rising:

If the economy’s going gangbusters, why are trade and jobs down?
