The Welsh dragon overlooks the area where the 38th (Welsh) Division attacked Mametz Wood between 7 and 14 July 1916. The wood was eventually cleared by 14 July but at a cost of over 4,000 British casualties. Further down you can just about make out Commonwealth War Graves Flatiron Copse Cemetery

The date on this photo is the 26th October 1942. The next day the man at front right, 20 year old Trooper Fred Keates, would be killed. The Sherman named 'Blighty' was knocked out at around 10am by German anti-tank fire. Fred, the loader, was buried next to his tank.

#OTD in 1944, with the front line in Europe stagnating, high command was horrified by the thought of a return to the Christmas truces of the First World War. Nonetheless, steps were taken to prepare the frontline troops and on 14 December a unusual cargo was loaded into an LST.

With regret it is announced that our HLM Jim Hooper died recently aged 98. In September 1944 he was a member of B Squadron of the GPR and flew in men of the South Staffs. A full obituary will appear in our newsletter.
