'Approaching Storm.' (1911) Lawren Harris's paintings of Toronto between 1909 to 1926 form a very important part of his body of work. The patchy light that plays over this building is poetic in character, helping to animate the scene and to guide our experience of the picture.

'View from the Window.' (c1950) Margaret Green was a painter of narrative landscapes and figure compositions of subtle strength and quiet lives; she remained largely unknown to a wider public - a story familiar to many women artists of her generation.

On holiday in Cumberland in 1921,Dora Carrington painted two pictures of Watendlath Farm: a view of the moorlands behind the farmhouse, now at the Tate Gallery, London; and this painting which has the same stone-walled field and the three transfixed sheep in the foreground.

'The Stars Coming Out.' (1912) Sir George Clausen's painting was made near Widdington, near Saffron Walden in Essex, probably one chilly autumn evening. Out of very simple elements, he constructed one of the most perfect nocturnes, a picture that rivals those of Millet and Corot.

'From a window at night.' (1896) Towards the end of her life, Maria Yakunchikova wrote that her work from the late 1890s attempted to convey the fleeting preoccupations of other lives - 'the flashes of another world, the perception of which is blended into the landscape.'

In the years after her move to Cornwall in 1907 there was nowhere more inspiring to Laura Knight than the cliffs above the ocean at Lamorna and at Carn Barges along the coast. 'On the Cliffs,' (1917) depicts two girls seated at the cliff-edge enjoying the late afternoon sun.

In 1964, Keith Vaughan bought a row of derelict cottages in Essex close to the village of Toppesfield. The local hedgeless fields, open countryside, and agricultural buildings soon began to replace his interest in painting groupings of male figures.
